Jacob Buckland says when he grows up he wants to be an orthodontist. “I’ve worn braces before, so I guess you could say I have had an interest in this profession for a while,” the 14-year-old Buckland said. “They help people to have a beautiful smile and that’s something I would like to do.” The Shady Spring Middle School eighth-grade student was announced as the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce’s Career Day essay grand prize winner. At Career Day, held last fall, students interacted with college representatives and the Academy of Careers and Technology after listening to health care, finance, hospitality, public service and technical presentations. “I am particularly good in math and science,” Buckland said. “I want to take some physiology and anatomy classes in high school to help me learn more about the human body and understand it better.” Buckland is the son of Mike and Pam Buckland of Beaver. Ellen Taylor, president of the chamber, says 11 students win $25 cash and certificates and the grand prize winner gets a $100 and a certificate. “He also gets to read his essay at the awards luncheon,” she said. The luncheon for the winners, their families and chamber members was held Monday at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. The event was sponsored by Mountain State University. “Eighth-graders that attended were instructed to write an essay about their experience at Career Day and what career they would most like to pursue,” Taylor said. “We hope we can get students to think about their careers earlier, instead of later.” The chamber’s Education Committee presents Career Day every fall, Taylor added.
