Beckley Intermodal Gateway Project
(Entire block bounded by Neville St., Leslie C. Gates Place, Prince Street & Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley WV)

Phase I construction of the Beckley Intermodal Gateway (BIG) began July 26, 2010. Beckley awarded the $15.1m construction contract to VCC, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia. The BIG is a downtown development and economic development initiative of the city and includes the entire block bounded by Neville, Leslie C. Gates Place, Prince Streets and Robert C. Byrd Drive. Phase I will include a parking structure, large public plaza for city events, improvements to the local transit system and other public amenities. Master planning for a second phase has been completed and additional funding is being sought.
Mayor Emmett Pugh III described BIG as the largest downtown Beckley project in over 10 years and noted: “this is another positive step in attracting people, investment and activity to Uptown Beckley”.
Project funding was secured by Congressman Nick J. Rahall II through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The amount of the federal grant is $20,017,000. Construction is scheduled for 14 months. City streets around the project will remain open to traffic and some short-term closures are expected. Beckley is implementing a parking relocation plan for individuals who use the current parking on the site for monthly parking.

A BIG construction groundbreaking ceremony was held August 11, 2010 at the site. Congressman Rahall, local and state officials attended and the public was invited.
